Counter protest to peacemakers, unity movement

Not everyone demanding justice for George Floyd and the black community supports the move by the Boys and Girls Club of Dane County to hire "peace keepers" to prevent protests from escalating into violence.

A few members of Urban Triage gathered outside the Boys and Girls Club on Allied Drive, saying people holding a solidarity moment inside with law enforcement were "playing the middle."

Protesters were angry that the Boys and Girls Club is trying to hire young people as peacemakers.

"You want our community to come and get paid and risk their lives to risk their lives two ways," Mattie Reese told 27 News. "They can get hurt and the coronavirus. But for $12.83? First of all I disagree with you even put a price on a life, but how dare you put $12.83."

Reese was referencing the advertised wage for the peace keeping positions.

Boys and Girls Club CEO Michael Johnson went outside and saw the counter protest, but did not speak to demonstrators while our crew was there.
