MADISON (WKOW) -- Protesters are continuing their week of action with another car caravan Thursday afternoon as the call for fundamental change at the Madison Police Department.

During a brief news conference about 3:30 p.m. before the caravan began, organizers with Freedom Inc. and Urban Triage said they are continuing their call for defunding of the police department and taking community control over police.

The caravan began on Park Street near Wingra Drive.

The Week of Action is part of a nationwide effort by the Movement for Black Lives calling on local officials and demanding justice for those who have been killed by police.

The protest was sparked by the killing of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis police, leading to nationwide outrage and demonstrations.

On Tuesday, a car caravan on the westbound Beltline in Madison slowed traffic to a halt while protesters marched down John Nolen Drive.

On Monday, demonstrators closed off John Nolen Drive during rush hour, and met with Madison Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway who came to talk to the protesters.
