Dozens of Dane County supervisors call for criminal justice reform

A group of 35 Dane County supervisors signed on to a letter calling for continued criminal justice reform.

The letter, sent Tuesday, contains an extensive list of changes undertaken by the county government in recent years before ending with demands for more alders to join them and take further action. The letter does not enumerate any specific reforms the board will take up.

The supervisors said they needed to continue to work "until we can guarantee that our criminal justice system treats residents of Dane County as fully human."

The letter comes amid over a week of continued protests in Madison and around the country against police brutality.

"The time has come for us to collectively redouble our efforts to destroy systems that further exhaust us," the letter said. "We need a united voice and we must denounce divided voices that further segregate us."
