An Illinois man drowned in Geneva Lake Sunday after police say he attempted to swim to the municipal beach from a boat moored about 100 yards off shore.
Lake Geneva police and the Geneva Lake Law Enforcement Agency were called about 6:40 p.m. Sunday for a welfare check on a boat moored on a buoy near Lake Geneva's municipal beach.
Officers went out to the boat, which was moored approximately 75 – 100 yards from shore.
People on the boat told police that a 35-year-old man left about 4:30 p.m. to swim to the beach with another person, according to a news release from the Geneva Lake Law Enforcement Agency.
The second person made it to shore and did not see their swimming companion.
He told police that he went back in the water to look for the swimmer, but did not find him in the water.
He said that he thought the swimmer may have made it to shore and he looked on the beach and went to two nearby bars looking for the other swimmer.
