Latest street message: ‘Defend Black Women’

MADISON (WKOW) -- A new message has been painted by activists overnight near the Dane County Jail in downtown madison.

Demonstrators from Freedom Inc. spent a few hours overnight spray painting "Defend Black Women" on Doty Street.

The street painting kicked off what the group is calling gender justice week of action.

Organizers say many times black women are punished after defending themselves in an attack.

"So we want to lift up the stories of so many women that because of their own survivorship-- they're being villainized and don't have the support that they need," said Jessica Williams, Freedom Inc., event organizer.

They say this is an effort to fight for the protection of all black women.
