Lightning strike hits downtown Madison apartment, displacing three people

MADISON (WKOW) -- A lightning strike caused a fire at a downtown Madison apartment complex Tuesday evening, according to City of Madison Fire Department.

Someone in the three flat apartment complex on the 100 block of W. Wilson Street heard an explosion and called 911.

Firefighters spotted smoke coming from a third floor window. Those living inside got out safely.

The fire was contained to the subspace after the lightning had followed a pipe chase. Firefighters had to open walls and ceilings in order to extinguish the fire.

Damage is estimated at $50,000. No one was injured. Those who live in the 2nd and 3rd floor apartments that were damaged will be staying with friends and family.
