City of Madison leaders are asking the federal government for more COVID-19 relief money.
At a news conference Wednesday, Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway said the city needs to see action from Congress and the president in the next 10 days to maintain existing efforts and expand them with new investments to address unemployment.
The $600/week stimulus bonus for people who are unemployed or furloughed because of the pandemic runs out next week.
She and other leaders argued the current relief money was put in place when the country did not know how long or badly the pandemic would impact us.
"Many Madison residents have lost their jobs. They're struggling to pay their rent. They're relying on food pantries. And they're struggling to keep their kids healthy and happy in the middle of a very dangerous pandemic," said Rhodes-Conway.
Leaders fear if Congress doesn't act with more relief money, there will be more unemployment, foreclosures and evictions in the Madison area.
