MADISON (WKOW) - The National Weather Service on Tuesday confirmed three tornadoes hit Wisconsin during Monday's long-winded storms.
These strong thunderstorms evolved from several storms over Minnesota and Iowa early on Monday. It developed into a widespread, long-lived wind storm, or "derecho".
Radar signatures and pictures indicated the possibility brief tornadoes in several spots throughout the state on Monday. Storm surveys completed by the National Weather Service on Tuesday, confirmed multiple tornadoes.
Camp Lake (Lake County IL to Kenosha County WI):A tornado formed along the leading edge of storms moving across northern Illinois and tracked into Camp Lake. The damage to buildings and trees were found to be consistent with a low end EF-1 tornado in northern Illinois, just south of the Wisconsin state line. Trees were mainly damaged in the Camp Lake area, consistent with an EF-0 tornado with winds around 80 mph.
Lake Geneva (Walworth County): The storm survey crew found damage consistent with a high-end EF-0 tornado. Winds upwards of 80 mph occurred and much of the damage was done to trees. Large limbs and tree trunks were knocked found on the ground or snapped.
Burton (Grant County):A brief EF-0 tornado with 85 mph peak wind gusts was confirmed near the intersection of Highway 133 and County Road. The survey crew found damage to farm outbuildings, a residence, trees, and power lines in this area.
This brings the total number of tornadoes in Wisconsin to 15 for the year 2020. The average yearly total is 23.
