MADISON (WKOW) -- The University of Wisconsin-Madison's Engineering Hall was evacuated due to a fire Friday morning.
According to a Twitter post from UW-Madison, 1415 Engineering Drive has been evacuated and is closed due to a "Madison Fire activity." People are asked to avoid the area.
The Madison Fire Department confirmed the fire was on the fifth floor of the Engineering building.
A spokesperson wrote, "MFD upgraded the call to a structure fire response, sending additional fire crews to the scene."
Officials said the fire was knocked down at 7:49 a.m.
According to the press release, fire crews are still working to clear smoke out from the building.
"Everybody evacuate the building safely. The cause of the fire is unknown at this time," she added.
According to UW-Madison, all classes at Engineering Hall have been canceled and the building is anticipated to remain closed all day.
Students are encouraged to pay attention to their emails for more information.
MFD said drivers passing through campus can expect traffic backups during this time.
