Madison's west side sees uptick in crimes, police increase patrol

MADISON (WKOW) — Madison police officers are continuing to investigate a shooting that happened Thursday evening on the city's west side.

Officers responded at 4:15 p.m. to multiple reports of gunshots. That's when they found two people who had been shot.

The two victims, both teenagers, know each other. Police believe it was a targeted attack.

No one is in custody and there are no suspects at this time.

"We're still trying to figure out what led to last night's shooting happening," said MPD spokesperson Stephanie Fryer.

Lately, there's been a concentration of crime in the neighborhood around Schroeder Road. Down the street, 25 vehicles were broken into just last week.  Many people found their windows smashed and various items stolen.

Because MPD is seeing an uptick in crime around this area, officers are trying to reinstate a feeling of safety for people living in that part of town.

"Our west district command staff made it a priority to do extra patrols in that area. Again, they went and talked to anyone coming out of the building, people in that area, handed them flyers, reminded them of some basic safety things that sometimes we forget," Fryer said.

Officers are still reviewing evidence to make arrests in both the Schroeder Road shooting and car break-ins.
