One missing boater found dead in Wisconsin River

WISCONSIN DELLS, Wis. (WKOW) -- The Wisconsin Dells Police Department announced on Friday afternoon that one of the boaters who went missing on Thursday was found dead.

Wisconsin Dells Police Chief Nicholas Brinker said crews on a DNR plane that was helping in the search spotted an item of interest. Crews on a search boat found the person's body near that item.

The second boater is still missing. Police said crews are still looking, but river flows and currents are making the search challenging. The river is also expected to rise in the next few days.

Alex Bilaloglu has been fishing near the Kilbourn Dam where the two boaters went missing for more than 10 years.

He says the the waters during this time of the year are unsafe.

"The water usually is very high this time of the year due to the ice melting up north and getting a lot of rain in April," Bilaloglu said. "Water gets really dangerous actually around here, especially when you see very big logs swimming in the water. Especially for the boats, the anglers. It's very dangerous in my opinion."

Divers tried to help in the search efforts on Friday, but they could not because the current made conditions unsafe. Crews also tried to use underwater drones to check areas of interest, but the currents are making the drones difficult to control.

Police are not releasing the name of the person who died or the person who is still missing at this time.
