Gas leak determined as cause of Town of Springfield home explosion

TOWN OF SPRINGFIELD, Wis. (WKOW) — The Dane County Sheriff's Office revealed the cause of an explosion that left a couple dead in their home last May.

The sheriff's office said the cause of the explosion was a gas leak. It happened in a Capitol View Road home the night of May 28, 2024. Rudolph Niederhauser and Ursuala "Uschi" Niederhauser were pronounced dead at the scene the following day. They were both 82 years old.

Dane County Sheriff's Office Spokesperson Elise Schaffer said detectives found nothing criminal during the investigation.

Schaffer said investigators have not been able to pinpoint the cause and location of the leak due to the severity of the damages in the home.
