MADISON (WKOW) — The family of a man who was hit by a car Monday evening and later died has identified him as Derrick Allen, 48.
Allen was hit while crossing the street at Kennedy Road and Northport Drive around 5:24 p.m. He was taken to the hospital in critical condition.
Madison Police Department spokesperson Stephanie Fryer said the driver stayed at the scene and is cooperating with the police. The investigation is ongoing.
Family said Allen was pronounced dead on Wednesday (May 28). They said their family did not have insurance after Allen lost his catering job at Monona Terrace during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Around the same time, about five years ago, Allen was diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer. He fought the disease and underwent a clinical trial. The care he received allowed him to spend more time with his family over the past several years.
"Through spirituality and determination, Derrick persevered through his daily battle with cancer so he could be a father to his children," a family friend wrote in a statement online. "This has been a long, painful and a financially draining process for his family."
