15 injured in fire at Beaver Dam apartment complex

BEAVER DAM (WKOW) -- Beaver Dam fire officials are investigating a fire that sent eight people to the hospital, including two firefighters.

The Beaver Dam Fire Department got the call just after midnight to 104 Lake Crest Drive, an apartment complex. It took them about 35 minutes to get the fire under control and they had to rescue several people from the second floor. Fire officials say five people were trapped in the apartment that caught fire.

Eight people were taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation or leg injuries, including two firefighters. One of the firefighters was bitten by a dog he was trying to rescue. In addition, seven people were treated at the scene, but then released.

The fire is still under investigation. It was contained to one apartment, but there is a considerable amount of smoke damage throughout the building. The 24 families who live there will have to find another place to live for awhile. The American Red Cross is helping them out.

The fire department says it responded to a fire at this same apartment complex a few weeks ago.
