Attempted homicide in Madison

UPDATE: From Madison police: 

Detectives believe the victim was walking in the 200  block of Rethke Ave. when someone approached her and shot the  37-year-old multiple times. Neighbors heard the gunfire and came to the  victim's aid as she called out for help. She is in critical condition  this morning, but doctors believe she will likely survive. The MPD's  Violent Crime Unit and other personnel are canvassing the neighborhood,  talking with residents. Other officers are collecting surveillance  video. The MPD is also having discussions with the victim's family and  friends as VCU seeks clues as to who is responsible for the attempted  homicide. They also hope to speak with the victim when she is able.

An attempted homicide late Wednesday night on Madison's East Side.  Police were called to Rethke Avenue around 11:30 p.m. after receiving several calls of "shots fired".  They found a 36 year old woman with gunshot wounds, who was taken to the hospital. No arrests have been made.
