Police: woman hid from officers in freezer

MADISON (WKOW) -- A woman who contributed to her daughter's overdose several years ago was charged on Thursday with a Fitchburg armed robbery and trying to hide from police in a freezer.

Authorities say 53-year-old Marybeth Welsch held a knife to a clerk at a Fitchburg gas station in December.Officials say the clerk escaped and Welsch hid in a freezer. Police say she was arrested and stolen money was recovered.

In court, Welsch's bail was set at $1,000 instead of a signature bond.

"I think given the violence and the fact that she was out on supervision," said  Dane County Court Commissioner Brian Asmus. "The significant exposure the cash bail is reasonable."

In 2011, Welsch was sentenced to prison after providing morphine to her teenage daughter. The girl nearly died from overdose.
