MADISON (WKOW)-- A two-story apartment building is damaged and several people are displaced after a fire early Tuesday morning, according to the Madison Fire Department.
MFD Spokesperson Joel Kneifel said a fire started just after 12 a.m. in one of the 8 units of a building on the 200 block of North Street. The residence is operated by the non-profit group Porchlight, which helps the area's homeless population.
When the Madison Fire Department arrived there were two people on the roof, trying to escape the fire, said Kneifel. Crews worked to put the fire out and get the people off of the roof.
Everyone was able to get out safely. No one was hurt.
Kneifel said the fire was contained to one of the rooms, but smoke damaged much of the residence. The water and power also had to be turned off.
The people who lived in the home have been displaced. The Red Cross is assisting.
No word on what started the fire. Authorities said the investigation is expected to continue through Tuesday.
