Madison woman hit and killed by vehicle overnight

UPDATE (WKOW) -- A Madison woman is dead after police say it appears she was struck by a vehicle overnight.

The Madison Police Department says the 61-year-old was hit on Stoughton Road. When they arrived around 11:45 p.m. Wednesday, the woman was dead. 

Traffic specialists say their investigation is in the preliminary stages, but it looks like the victim had injuries consistent with having been struck by a vehicle. The driver did not stay and the scene. Police are still looking for that person and their vehicle.

The Madison Police Department is asking anyone who was traveling south on Highway 51 (Stoughton Road0 at the time and witnessed the crash to call 911.

As of 3:10 a.m., all southbound lanes of Stoughton Road (U.S. 51) are closed.

MADISON (WKOW) -- Madison police officers are on the scene of a fatal hit-and-run crash.

The incident happened early Thursday morning on Stoughton Road, between Pflaum Road and Buckeye Road. That's just northeast of La Follette High School.

The Madison Police Department confirms someone died. The driver took off after the crash.
