Broadcasters association cancels Democratic gubernatorial primary debate

The Wisconsin Broadcasters Association today canceled its debate for Democratic candidates for governor after receiving push back for only inviting four of the 10 candidates running.

The WBA instead said it will focus on the general election, according to a news release Thursday.

“There is a lot of interest in these primary elections, which is why we initially made an attempt to hold these debates.” WBA President and CEO Michelle Vetterkind said in the news release. “By withdrawing the offer for primary debates, others can now pursue candidate forums in their respective primaries.”

Details regarding the debates in the races for U.S. Senate and governor of Wisconsin will be announced at a later date and will be offered on television and radio stations across the state, according to the news release.

“Broadcasters remain committed to helping Wisconsin voters make informed decisions at the ballot box and the WBA Foundation is looking forward to playing an important role in that process this fall," Vetterkind said.

The WBA earlier responded to the criticism by saying the debate is limited to 60 minutes and “given the time allowed, we can only accommodate four candidates.”
