Eight Madison-area beaches open for swimming but no-wake rule stays

Your choices for lake swimming in the Madison area will be few over the Fourth of July as will lakes where you can gun your boat motor.

Of the 19 inspected locations, Public Safety of Madison-Dane County inspectors say eight are open for swimming while 11 remain closed.

The only two locations on Lake Mendota open for swimming through Wednesday are Lake Mendota County Park and James Madison park.

Of the remaining six open beaches, most are on Lake Monona including B.B. Clark, Frost Woods, Olin, Schluter and Bernie's Beach on Lake Monona Bay.

The beach at Stewart County Park Lake near Mt. Horeb is also open.

Blue-green algae is the main culprit in all the beach closings though inspectors say additional high bacteria counts at some others also qualify for a beach being closed.

High-speed boating on lakes, Monona, Waubesa and Kegonsa is also prohibited as the no-wake restriction will remain in effect through this coming weekend.

However, if you feel the need for speed, there is no restriction on Lake Mendota.
