-- A Madison man is charged with attempted homicide after police say he doused another man with a chemical, severely burning him.
The charges against Matthew DeJesus, 31, were filed Wednesday in Dane County Circuit Court. DeJesus is charged with Attempted First Degree Intentional Homicide, Using an Oleoresin Device for Harm or a Crime and Disorderly Conduct - Use of a Dangerous Weapon.
DeJesus is suspected in a chemical attack on another man at an apartment in the area of Raymond Road and Leland Drive in June. Police say he then holed up inside the apartment building. Police officers and members of a SWAT team arrested DeJesus after a five-hour standoff.
DeJesus spent some time in the hospital after the attack, then was brought to the Dane County Jail. According to a criminal complaint, he told a doctor the alleged victim tackled him, splashing the chemical everywhere.
But police say after talking with witnesses, DeJesus poured the industrial-strength acid on the 32-year-old victim. The man was with a woman who has a child with DeJesus. The 32-year-old man was taken to the hospital with significant burns. The criminal complaint says the burns were labeled as "deep" and covered about 25% of his body. He needed to be put into a medically-induced coma, according to the complaint.
The criminal complaint also claims DeJesus sprayed the woman with bear mace the night before, causing burns.
