Former Madison police officer pleads guilty to OWI

MADISON (WKOW) — A former Madison police officer pleaded guilty to one count of OWI (1st with passenger under 16) Tuesday morning.

She will be sentenced in December.

Authorities said Officer Kelly Hoeft was off-duty when she drove drunk in June 2017 with a 5-year-old child in her car, smashing into a street sign. Investigators said Hoeft’s blood alcohol level was more than three times Wisconsin’s legal limit.

During jury selection Monday, Dane County Judge Jill Karofsky asked Hoeft if she wanted to be referred to as a police officer during her trial.  Hoeft’s attorney responded by saying Hoeft is no longer an officer.

Police Chief Mike Koval said Hoeft resigned in May, during a disciplinary review of her actions.
