One new case in UW Hospital Legionnaires’ Disease outbreak

The Legionnaires’ Disease outbreak at UW Hospital has now infected 5 people.

UW Health says a new patient tested positive for the pneumonia-like illness Thursday morning.

That patient is now undergoing an antibiotic treatment.

It is also saying that one of the four originally diagnosed patients passed away late Wednesday night.

Lisa Brunette, a UW Health Spokesperson, said that the patient was in the hospital for multiple, severe health problems and, “the death was not unexpected.”

Hospital officials say the outbreak most likely started after a change in the water treatment system led to the bacteria spreading.

Two of the original four patients are still receiving treatment and have been upgraded to good condition.
