Sonic boom shakes parts of southern Wisconsin

Residents in Columbia County were shaken Thursday afternoon by a sonic boom that police say was caused by military flights.

Residents in and around the Portage reported hearing and feeling a powerful boom about 1:40 p.m. Thursday that many thought was some type of explosion, according to a Portage Police news release.

Portage police were able to confirm with authorities at Truax field that military flight maneuvers had been taking place that would have caused a “sonic boom.”

The 115th Fighter Wing based in Madison regularly does training flights, although typically they are during the evening or at night, according to their Facebook page.
