Middleton High teacher placed on leave after allegedly used racial slur in

A Middleton High School teacher has been placed on leave after the district’s office received reports that the teacher had used a racial slur during class.

Administrators are interviewing the teacher and students about the incident, according to a news release from the Middleton-Cross Plains Area School District.

The release did not address if the teacher would continue to receive pay.

The school district has had to “address multiple incidents” of racism or bigotry, according to the release.

The release also highlighted the school district’s sponsorship of the upcoming MLK Forum on Social Action as an example of how the district attempts to “be a leader in the equity efforts across Dane County.”

In a message to families and staff earlier this month, Superintendent George Mavroulis said, “inclusive schools (are) where everyone thrives.”

The news release about the reports of a racial slur’s use by a teacher reiterated several elements from Mavroulis’ message.

“Bullying, harassment, or expressions against any individual or group because of race, religion, nationality, gender, disability, gender identity or expression, physical characteristics or sexual orientation is not tolerated in the Middleton-Cross Plains Area School District,” read the release.

The message encouraged recipients aware of violations of the district’s tolerance policies to “bring the situation to the attention of school administration.”

“Once reported, an investigation will be launched immediately,” according to the district
