Janesville YMCA CEO placed on administrative leave, investigation pending

The CEO of YMCA of Northern Rock County has been placed on administrative leave as part of steps by the board of directors to address recent concerns with the organization.

In a statement, Board President Steve Yeko, Jr. said the board “placed CEO Tom Denboer on administrative leave, pending the outcome of the investigative process.”

This was done to address “the concerns that have been raised by members of the organization and our community.”

The “concerns” referenced by Yeko are likely over financial and governance transparency, according to reporting by the Janesville Gazette.

The Janesville Gazette has also reported the board hired the law firm Foley & Lardner to aid with an investigation.

YMCA of Northern Rock County operates two locations: the Parker YMCA in Milton and the Downtown Janesville YMCA.

Yeko said the board would also invite three former members who had previously been ousted to “participate” at the next meeting. Yeko did not specify if the three would be reinstated to the board.

The board will also add four new members, according to Yeko. This request came from YMCA members who had particular candidates in mind.

Yeko said these potential new members will have to fill out applications “which will be subject to regular board review and consideration, but at an accelerated pace.”

“We want to assure our members and the general public that all operations of the YMCA are continuing without interruption,” said Yeko. “We are committed to working together to strengthen the trust and confidence in the organization among our members and the broader community.”

Yeko’s statement was released through a representative from the Milwaukee public relations firm Mueller Communication.

The next board meeting is January 28, according to Yeko.
