Dozens of vehicles involved in crash on Leo Frigo Bridge

GREEN BAY (WBAY) — A crash involving dozens of vehicles has closed the Leo Frigo Bridge in Green Bay.

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation says the southbound lanes of I-43 are closed at Atkinson Drive. They closed northbound lanes to allow emergency crews better access to the scene.

Green Bay Police tells our affiliate WBAY-TV that the original call reported 60 vehicles involved in the crash, but it’s not quite that many.

Vehicles spun out in different directions.

There are numerous injuries, but no reports of fatalities at this time.

Police say conditions on the bridge are “cold, windy and slick.”

Police described the crash as “not as bad as Neenah, but very Neenah-esque.” That refers to the 131-vehicle pileup on I-41.

“Traffic engineers will be monitoring city intersections and working with the police department to minimize traffic backups in the city,” reads a statement from Green Bay Police.

Law enforcement officials were heading north in the southbound lanes to reach the vehicles involved in the crash.

Traffic is being detoured downtown and over the Ray Nitschke Bridge (Main Street).

The Leo Frigo Bridge–also known as Tower Drive Bridge–spans the Fox River in downtown Green Bay.

Green Bay Police said earlier this morning that roads were slippery in the city.
