Family heading to Black Hawk girl’s state basketball game injured in crash

Nine people in an SUV on their way to watch Black Hawk play in the girls WIAA state basketball tournament in Green Bay were injured Friday morning in a crash involving a semi.

The driver of the semi was treated and released from the hospital.

According to the Green County Sheriff’s office, an SUV was driving northbound on Wisconsin Highway 69, when deer ran onto the road.

“The family was in the process of traveling to the Wisconsin Girl’s State Basketball Tournement in Green Bay, WI to watch the Black Hawk Girl’s Basketball team,” the Sheriff’s office said in a news release.

Investigators said the family collided with one of several deer that had crossed the highway in the path of the SUV. The driver was taking evasive action to avoid colliding with the others when struck from behind by the semi.

All the passengers of the SUV were taken to the hospital with “a variety of injuries.”

According to the Green County Sheriff’s Office, the SUV was driven by Gerald Heimann, 54 of Gratiot.
