Driver attacks man who stopped to help following Grant County crash

MUSCODA (WKOW) — A driver who eventually was arrested under suspicion of a second OWI fought with bystanders and police before being taken into custody.

Jacob Kienitz, 30 from Blue River, Wisconsin, also faces two counts of threatening the life of a law enforcement officer, two counts disorderly conduct, one count resisting arrest, one count resisting arrest causing injury to an officer and one count of battery.

Deputies say that on their way to a report of a crash about 2:30 p.m. Friday, they learned that Kienitz was allegedly swinging a tire iron at a farmer who had stopped to help.

The farmer was able to defend himself with a shovel and eventually wrestle Kienitz to the ground where he was held until deputies arrived, according to a Grant County Sheriff’s Office news release.

Kienitz also reportedly fought with deputies in the ER while they attempted an arrest.

One deputy sustained minor injuries during the struggle.

Kienitz was eventually overcome and transported to the Grant County Jail where he remains without bond.

Investigators say the crash which precipitated the fracas began with Kienitz traveling eastbound on Blue River Rd in his 2013 Chevy Malibu at speeds that witnesses say was nearly 100 mph.

That’s when he passed the tractor, whose driver stopped to help.

At the same time Daisy Hostetler, age 46 from rural Muscoda, was pulling out of a driveway located on Blue River Rd just east of Old Blue River Rd in her 2003 Dodge Durango.

Kienitz struck the driver’s side front quarter of Hostetler’s vehicle, sending Hostetler’s vehicle into the ditch on the north side of the roadway.

After striking Hostetler’s vehicle Kienitz’s vehicle traveled approximately 300 feet on Blue River Rd and came to rest in the ditch on the south side of Blue River Rd.

Both vehicles sustained heavy front end damages. There were no reported injuries by either driver or Hostetler’s passenger. Everyone was wearing seat belts.
