Driver avoids police stop, crashes into Beloit gas line

UPDATE (WKOW) — A vehicle involved in a police pursuit crashed into a gas line on Harrison Avenue overnight causing a leak and evacuation of surrounding homes, according to the Beloit Police Department.

In a news release, police said shortly before midnight officers tried to stop a vehicle for a violation at Wisconsin and Henry Avenues. The driver did not stop and the officer followed at a “low rate of speed,” eventually terminating the pursuit.

A short time later, that same vehicle crashed into another car at Harrison and Woodward Avenues. The suspect’s vehicle then ran into the gas line on Harrison Avenue while the other vehicle hit a pole and flipped onto its roof.

The suspect driver, a 29-year-old Beloit man, and the driver of the other vehicle involved were taken to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The suspect was later taken into custody.

The investigation is being conducted by the Rock County Sheriff’s Office. It is ongoing.
