A woman was shot Wednesday afternoon on the 200 block of State Street after getting into an SUV with someone she knows, according to Joel DeSpain, public information officer for the Madison Police Department.
The woman, who police say is in her 40s, got into the SUV and then a gun went off, hitting her in the upper torso.
Police described the woman as alert when they arrived but said she “suffered a serious injury.” She was taken to a hospital.
State Street reopened before 4:30 p.m.
Police are working to determine if the gun was fired accidentally or with intent to shoot the woman.
The man in the SUV, also in his 40s, is in police custody for questioning.
