13-year-old leads deputies on short chase into Columbia Co

The Columbia County Sheriff’s Office says it helped Dane County authorities find a stolen vehicle and behind the wheel was a 13-year-old.

The sheriff’s office says five minors were in the vehicle; two 13-year-olds and three 14-year olds.

The young driver was being monitored by GPS by the Dane County Sheriff’s Office Friday afternoon when it crossed into Columbia County on State Trunk Highway 16/51 around 2:40 p.m. When a deputy tried to stop the Ford Fusion, a short pursuit took place.

The Columbia County Sheriff’s Office says the driver reached 95 miles per hour before stopping voluntarily just south of the Portage city limits.

All five juveniles were taken into custody. The highway was briefly closed during that time. No one was injured.

The Dane County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the circumstances surrounding the stolen vehicle.
