Three officers named in Madison shooting which left one man dead

The Wisconsin Department of Justice released the names of the three Madison officers involved in a Sunday night shooting which left one man dead.

The Madison Police Department put Sgt. Ryan Gibson and officers Sonny Martinez and Justin Nelson on paid administrative leave following the alleged exchange of gunfire, according to a DOJ statement.

An ongoing investigation determined the three men responded to a shots fired report in the 6500 block of Raymond Road. 63-year-old Dean G. Thomas allegedly approached the officers and fired a gun at them.

Gibbson, Martines and Nelson then returned fire, according to the DOJ. Thomas was hit.

Authorities at the scene tried to save Thomas’ life before he was taken to UW Health University Hospital. Thomas later died.

DOJ, assisted by Wisconsin State Patrol, Wisconsin State Crime Lab, the DOJ Office of Crime Victim Services and Madison Police Department, is continuing to investigate.
