Madison man arrested after chase, standoff with Sun Prairie police

UPDATE (WKOW) -- A man is in police custody after firing a gun inside a Sun Prairie home, leading police on a chase and causing a standoff on the interstate, according to the Sun Prairie Police Department.

Authorities were called to the 1000 block of Pine Street at about 3 a.m. for a report of a fight between and man and women. The man, identified as Ronnie Ballard of Madison, fired a handgun inside the home. No one was hit.

Ballard then drove away in the woman's car without her permission.

Police tried to pull him over, but he continued to speed away. He eventually stopped at the top of the westbound I-90 off-ramp to County Highway V in the town of Vienna. Ballard put the gun to his head and a standoff began.

The on and off-ramps in that area were closed, as were both lanes of County Highway V near I-90 during that time.

Eventually, Ballard put the gun down and got out of the car. He was taken into custody by 4:45 a.m.

He was arrested on one count of first degree recklessly endangering safety, one count of burglary, one count of felon in possession of a firearm, one count of operating a motor vehicle without the owner's consent, one count of felony eluding and found counts of misdemeanor bail-jumping.
