Elementary student brings loaded handgun to school in Beloit

Officials in Beloit said a teacher at Todd Elementary School found a loaded handgun in student's backpack Tuesday.

City spokesperson Sarah Millard said the teacher immediately confiscated the backpack and took safety precautions in the classroom.

The Beloit Police Department cannot criminally charge the student because they are too young according to Wisconsin State Statutes. Instead, police arrested the student's 36-year-old stepfather for leaving the loaded gun within reach of the child.

The stepfather was released from jail. Charges are pending from the Rock County District Attorney's Office.

Beloit police are not releasing the name and gender of the student. School district officials said the student will not be in school for the foreseeable future.
