Social security scammers pose as Middleton Police officers

MIDDLETON (WKOW) -- Middleton police are warning people about scammers who are trying to steal social security numbers.

On Wednesday, a Middleton resident reported receiving phone calls from two individuals claiming to be from the Middleton Police Department. The individuals claimed to be Officer Marshall and Chief Troy Hellenbrand.

According to the Middleton Police Department, the scammers told the victim someone had been using their social security account, and they were working to find out who. They told the victim to buy two gift cards in case her account couldn't be accessed, and, in order to verify that her personal information wasn't compromised, she needed to send them pictures of the front and back of the gift cards.

While there is not an Officer Marshall employed by the Middleton Police Department, Chief Troy Hellenbrand is the Chief of Police.
