American Family reworks IT department, affecting 200 positions

American Family Insurance is transforming its information technology services and the change could affect about 200 positions.

A spokesperson for American Family Insurance told 27 News as technology becomes a bigger part of its business, the Madison-based company has decided to use a contractor, Capgemini, for more of its tech support services. Capgemini can provide tech support 24/7.

The AmFam employees doing that work now will be offered the opportunity to enter into a "re-skilling curriculum," where they would retain employment with the company, but learn new skills in technology development. American Family says it will pay for the re-skilling program and once completed, employees would be "prime candidates" for a new position within the company, although they are not guaranteed a position.

Employees who don't go through the re-skilling program can either apply for a different job within American Family, can apply to work for the contractor, Capgemini, or can leave the company with separation benefits.

All of the positions affected by the change are based at corporate headquarters in Madison.

AmFam says the transition will be implemented over the next three to six months. Employees were told about their options Tuesday and Wednesday, although AmFam says they learned of the possibility last July.

"Long-term, we expect our IT employee count to increase," says American Family Insurance Media Relations Director Ken Muth.
