Court Rules Trump Administration Can Withhold Grants From Sanctuary Cities

Federal Agents Target Immigrant Gangs On Long Island

The 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Manhattan ruled that the Trump administration can withhold grant money to cities and states that refuse to cooperate with federal immigration officials. The ruling overturns a lower court's decision, which ordered the administration to release the funds to New York, Connecticut, New Jersey, Washington, Massachusetts, Virginia, and Rhode Island.

The states sued the Justice Department after the Trump administration cut off funding to any so-called "sanctuary cities" unless they agreed to give immigration officials access to their jails and provide an advanced warning when somebody who is in the country illegally is about to be released.

The 2nd Circuit found that the Attorney General has the power to place conditions on any state or municipality that receives federal grant money. The ruling conflicts with the decisions by federal appeals courts in Chicago, Philadelphia, and San Francisco. They all ruled against the Trump administration and upheld injunctions ordered by lower courts.
