Suspect in custody after reports of shots fired near University Hospital

A prisoner being brought to the UW Hospital emergency room by Fitchburg police Tuesday attempted to grab an officer’s gun, which went off in a waiting room.

Two officers with the Fitchburg Police Department were transporting a prisoner to the Emergency Department for evaluation and treatment.

When the prisoner was being moved to another area in the waiting room, he attempted to disarm one of the police officers, according to a news release.

During the struggle, one round was fired into the ceiling of the waiting room. The officers quickly regained control of the subject and he was taken into custody. No one was injured.

A Wisc-Alert was sent out a short time ago that a suspect was taken into custody after reports of shots fired outside of University Hospital.

Moments before that an alert was sent out that everyone in the area should avoid the Emergency Department and take shelter. We're still working to gather more information at this story develops.
