One sent to hospital after a Sun Prairie apartment fire Thursday night

SUN PRAIRIE (WKOW) -- One person was sent to the hospital after a fire at a Sun Prairie apartment building late Thursday night.

Fire officials say they responded to the 1000 block of O'Keefe Avenue just before midnight for a report of an odor of smoke and active fire alarm system.

When they got there they found that a fire inside one apartment unit had been extinguished by a single fire sprinkler. They say the fire did not spread to any other apartment in the 28-unit building.

Fire officials say damage is estimated at $15,000. One person was sent to the hospital for smoke inhalation.

Upon their initial investigation, fire officials learned that the resident tried to extinguish the fire which delayed calling 911 and activating the fire alarm system.

They remind residents that if they discover a fire, to get to a safe location and immediately call 911 and activate the fire alarm system if present.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
