Victim in Friday shooting has died; police investigating as homicide

The victim of a shooting Friday in Madison has died.

The Madison man, 81, died at a hospital yesterday and police now are investigating it as a homicide, according to an incident report released Tuesday.

The suspect is 38-years-old. He lived in the same building as the victim and is currently hospitalized for a medical condition. Madison police will release the name of suspect when they are booked into jail, which has not happened as of Tuesday morning.

Two Hmong translators assisted officers and detectives at the scene. The motive for the attack is under investigation. The victim was shot inside his apartment.

The Dane County Medical Examiner will determine when his name is released.

Police were called just after 9 p.m. Friday to the 1800 block of Northport Drive for reports of a person down. When they got there, they were directed to a suspect who may have been armed with a handgun.

After police took the suspect into custody outside, they found the gunshot wound victim inside the nearby apartment.

The victim was taken to a nearby hospital and is in critical condition and later died.
