‘Please stay home tonight:’ Madison Mayor asks for end to violence

-- Madison Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway issued a call Tuesday for looting and other criminal acts which have plagued Madison's State Street in recent days to come to an end.

"It is time for this to end,"Rhodes-Conway wrote in a blog post. "Please stay home tonight."

The mayor said she felt legitimate protests provided cover for "violent, unacceptable behavior."

The last three nights have seen groups of vandals and looters use the protests against police brutality as an opportunity to destroy and steal from Madison storefronts.

The city's isthmus remains under a curfew Tuesday night beginning at 9:30 p.m. and extending until 5 a.m. Wednesday.

"I understand anger, but there is no excuse for putting lives in danger, and that is what is happening," the mayor wrote. "Again – please stay home tonight, and tomorrow night."
