Son faces attempted homicide charges following Sauk County shootout

- Gary W. Dickson, 37 of Reedsburg, faces two counts of attempted first-degree intentional homicide following an exchange of gunfire early June 29 at the home of his mother and her husband.

A Sauk County Circuit Court Judge signed a probably cause statement in the case, according to a news release from the Sauk County Sheriff's Office.

Additional charges of two counts of first-degree recklessly endangering safety by use of a dangerous weapon, burglary while armed to an occupied dwelling, theft of a firearm and felony bail jumping will be referred to the Sauk County District Attorney’s Office within the coming days, according to the news release.

The Sauk County Communications Center received a 911 call about 3:45 a.m. Monday from a home in the village of North Freedom.

The caller was reporting that someone was shooting at their home. While dispatchers were getting more information, the caller said that the person had gotten into their home and gunfire was exchanged between the two.

Deputies arrived and found numerous windows shot out of the home. The suspect had shot his way through a patio door to gain entry. Deputies found the suspect on the ground suffering from numerous gunshot wounds. Deputies also located the two residents of the home inside and they were not injured.

Investigators say the 37-year-old son of the woman who lived at the home arrived and started shooting the windows out of the home in an attempt to get inside.

The mother and her husband retreated to the basement of the home as the son made entry.

The son fired numerous rounds inside the home and stopped to reload. As the son proceeded down a hallway to the basement, one of the residents, now armed with a firearm, fired back at the suspect striking him several times.

The son was transported to UW Hospital in Madison by Med-Flight Helicopter for treatment of his injuries. He remains in critical condition.
