Attempted robbery turns into shootout in Madison, 2 men hurt

UPDATE (WKOW) -- The Madison Police Department is investigating an attempted homicide after an attempted robbery and shooting on the southwest side of the city.

MPD said it happened at about 6:30 p.m. in the area of Leland Drive and Balsam Road, just south of Raymond Road. 911 callers reported a "gun battle" with shots going back and forth.

Officers located a 32-year-old man bleeding heavily from the leg and foot. A large amount of blood was lost.

The victim said two men attempted to rob him at gunpoint. He told police he had his own gun and shot back. He said one man was hit.

Later Monday evening, a 23-year-old man from Chicago arrived at a hospital with a gunshot wound to the torso.

Madison's Violent Crime Unit is leading the investigation into this latest shooting.
