12-year-old girl arrested for stealing car, Madison police say

Madison police arrested a 12-year-old girl after she allegedly stole a car she did not know how to drive, causing damage on the city's west side.

Police said they responded to Gammon Lane at 11:47 a.m.Wednesday for a traffic incident, according to Madison police.

Officers took the young girl into custody for second degree reckless endangerment, operating a motor vehicle without owner's consent, and resisting.

Police say the girl stole the car after finding it unlocked with the keys inside on McKenna Boulevard.

She then allegedly drove in the wrong lane of traffic, jumped a curb, took out a mailbox and overcorrected back across the roadway. The car hit and destroyed a dresser left on the curb as trash before stopping short of hitting a residential building, according to police.

Officers said the girl admitted she did not know how to operate the car.
