Madison police arrest teen for hate crime after attack on Metro bus

Madison police have arrested a teenager for what they call a "hate crime" on a Metro bus earlier this month.

Deangelo G. Francisco, 17, was booked into the Dane County Jail Thursday morning. He faces tentative charges of physical abuse of a child with a hate crime enhancer, attempted theft, disorderly conduct and bail jumping.

A police incident report says Francisco is accused of yelling racial epithets at the 16-year-old victim, who is Black, while repeatedly punching and kicking him.

Both Francisco and the victim were riding a Metro bus at the time, the night of July 10.

The victim had a bloody nose, bruises to his neck and torso and scratches to his face, according to police.

The report says video of the assault shows it was unprovoked and the suspect tried to steal some of the victim's things.

Police say Francisco had been hospitalized on an unrelated matter and was arrested shortly after he was discharged.
