Bucks select Beauchamp; Davis and Baldwin also selected in NBA Draft

The Milwaukee Bucks stood pat on Thursday night at the NBA Draft, taking 6-5 guard MarJon Beauchamp with the No. 24 overall selection.

Beauchamp played last season for the G-League Ignite, a one-year developmental team associated with but not actually a part of the NBA’s G-League.

The Yakima, WA native, who initially chose to work out privately rather than attend college, averaged 15.1 points, 6.5 rebounds, 2 assists, and 1.5 steals over 34.6 minutes per game with Ignite, standing out on both ends.

"I feel like I found myself,” Beauchamp told reporters shortly after being drafted about his season with Ignite. “I found new ways in my game, not just on the court but just off the court. Building good habits and really, just like I said, finding a defensive motor and learning the defensive terminology.”

"We got a player,” Bucks assistant general manager Milt Newton told reporters at Fiserv Forum shortly after the pick was made. “Versatile, can defend multiple positions, really athletic, great defender. He will fit in with our schemes and big-time competitor. A player that we really wanted.”

In addition to the Bucks selection, two other players that grew up in Wisconsin and played college ball in the state were also drafted, both in the first round.

Former Wisconsin standout and La Crosse native Johnny Davis was selected at No. 10 overall by the Washington Wizards, while Sussex Hamilton star and former Milwaukee Panther Patrick Baldwin, Jr. was taken at No. 28 by the NBA Champion Golden State Warriors.

Several other players with Wisconsin ties did not get drafted at all.

Marquette’s Justin Lewis did not get selected but agreed to a free agent deal with the Chicago Bulls. Also, Wake Forest prospect Alondes Williams, a Milwaukee native from Riverside High School also went undrafted, but singed a two-way deal with Brooklyn.

Former Milwaukee Washington standout Michael Foster, Jr., a teammate of Beauchamp’s last season at G-League Ignite was also not selected.
