Marquette University Hosts Drag Queen Story Hour

Marquette University hosted a "Drag Queen Story Hour" last month, "The Dan O'Donnell Show" has learned.

The Marquette Wire was first to report on the controversial event at Haggerty Museum of Art on the Marquette campus during an event on October 12th that was rebranded from "Family Day" to Community Day."

"In addition to the exhibitions, there is a performative art element to the day," the student newspaper reported on October 8th. "The event will also feature a Drag Queen Story Hour, where local drag queens will read stories about [writers Ben] Shahn, [T.S.] Eliot and artist Keith Haring.

According to the Louis Joliety Society, Marquette's Drag Queen Story Hour was sponsored by the Cream City Foundation, which recently launched "Drag Queen Story Hour Milwaukee."

"Drag Queen Story Hour is just what it sounds like–drag queens reading stories to children in libraries, schools, and bookstores," the Cream City Foundation explains on its website. "DQSH captures the imagination and play of the gender fluidity of childhood and gives kids glamorous, positive, and unabashedly queer role models."

The organization further describes the mission of Drag Queen Story Hour as "a fun and entertaining way to educate all ages about progressive social justice & human growth and development issues through literature and reading."

Drag Queen Story Hour events are highly controversial, with critics alleging that they are overtly sexualized in nature and push a political agenda on young children. Marquette University has not yet responded to a request for comment on its event.

"I think this is absolutely disgusting," one Marquette alumnus told "The Dan O'Donnell Show" on Friday, "especially for a supposedly Catholic school. Why are they pushing this on young kids?"

Editor's Note: A previous version of this story erroneously reported that "Drag Queen Story Hour" took place during Marquette University's Family Weekend. It took place on what had been the Haggerty Museum of Art's Family Day.
