MIDDLETON SHOOTING: Medical examiner identifies shooter

The Dane County Medical Examiner’s Office has identified the shooter who injured four at a Middleton software company as Anthony Y. Tong, 43, of Verona.

The shooting took place at WTS Paradigm on Deming Way where Tong worked at about 10:25 a.m. on Sept. 19, 2018.

After being shot by police, Tong was transported from the scene to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

A forensic autopsy was completed today at the Dane County Medical Examiner’s Office.  Preliminary results of that autopsy confirm that Tong died from firearm related trauma, according to a news release.

Middleton Police Chief Charles Foulke said in a news conference Thursday morning, the gunman in Wednesday’s workplace shooting acted alone, and there is no threat to the public.

Chief Foulke confirmed law enforcement executed a search warrant at the Tong’s home on the southwest side of Madison Wednesday night. Foulke did not go into detail about what was taken.

Police say Tong came to work Wednesday at WTS Paradigm in Middleton and started shooting some time after. Investigators have not determined a motive. Foulke said the shooter had worked with the company since April 2017.

Victims’ names will not be released at this point in time. Foulke said two men and one woman remain in serious condition at the hospital. Other people in WTS Paradigm were hiding under desks, barricading themselves in rooms or ran from the business during the shooting.

Representatives with the Department of Criminal Investigation are scheduled to interview the two Middleton police officers and two Dane County deputies who shot at the suspect Friday. Their identities will not be released until those formal interviews are completed.
