Milwaukee Police Chief Alfonso Morales says Officer Matthew Rittner was part of a group of officers trying to arrest a man suspected of illegally selling guns and drugs when he was shot and killed Wednesday morning.
Rittner, 35, was brought to Froedert Hospital, where he died. The 17 year veteran of the Milwaukee Police Department leaves behind a wife and young son. Rittner served three tours of duty in the Middle East as a Marine, surviving multiple IED attacks and a four-hour firefight, Morales said Wednesday night.
Rittner is the third Milwaukee officer killed in the line of duty in eight months.
Jordan Fricke, 26, was arrested for the deadly shooting. As of Wednesday night, crime scene investigators remained at the small home on Milwaukee’s south side where the shooting happened.
Fellow officers escorted, saluted, and honored the fallen officer’s body as it was driven from the hospital to the coroner’s office.
